the morning is full

about

This is the initial rough treatment I did for my setting of Pablo Neruda's fourth poem in his classic "20 love poems and a song of despair", translated by W. S. Merwin. It uses the original translation for the lyrics and is one of the few poems I can recite from memory. I ended up using this for Argentum, but have to do the others...

lyrics

The morning is full of storm
in the heart of summer.
The clouds travel like white handkerchiefs of goodbye,
The wind travelling, waving them in its hands.

The numberless heart of the wind,
beating above our loving silence.

Orchestral and divine, resounding among the trees,
like a language full of wars and songs.

Wind that bears off dead leaves in a quick raid,
and deflects the pulsing arrows of the birds.

Wind that topples her in a wave without spray,
and substance without weight, and leaning fires.

Her mass of kisses breaks and sinks,
assailed by the door of the summer wind.

Pablo Neruda, 1923
